Tracing roots to conventional African slave folk songs which came in 1619 to Jamestown, Virgina, in the beginning soul music was “African Spirituals” from 1825 and the next twenty five years. Black slaves often used west African songs which had significant harmonious and metrical relationship with the spirituals as a means of secrest communication Gospel music became more popular and replaced them at the end of the 19th century. African gospel tunes came from a mixture of earlier church songs, components from the slave and spiritual performance techniques. The dance, which was accompanied by a piano, organ tambourines, electric guitar, and hand-clapping was reflected by the singing. To find out more information on soul music, visit the website above.
