Great wiper blades are a real asset in motoring and good quality is really important. Almost all vehicles these days have wiperblades fitted, including trains and even aircraft. They were invented by J. H. Apjohn in 1903 but this was different from what we see today. Also in 1903, Mary Anderson came up with a modification of the blade by using a ‘swinging arm’ mechanism. For good visibility the screen is cleared with a combination of the spray of fluid and the wiperblade. The pump can be filled with wiper fluid or in warmer climates water can be used – although problems can occur at low temperatures with water freezing. Eventually the technology advanced so that wiperblades were eventually added to headlights and the rear window. One of the most recent advances in the world of wiperbades is the development of water sensitive blades that operate once it begins to rain.
