A dentist is responsible for providing oral healthcare to patients, which includes performing extractions and root canals, providing fillings, crafting dentures, etc. The dentist deals with patients, dental staff, medical and nursing staff, administrative and support staff, and consults with physicians and other dentists. The dentist examines patients and provides appropriate medical aid for emergency patients. The dentist also has to make accurate entries on patients’ charts, keep up-to-date records of clinical reports, and ensure that other paperwork is handled correctly by his or her staff. Supervising dental assistants and dental hygienists is also part of a dentist’s job. One must have a dental degree, such as a DDS or DMD, to work as a dentist. These degrees are postgraduate degrees awarded by dental schools. A dentist job also requires that one be certified to perform CPR.
