The Pros and Cons of the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
Health January 31st. 2010, 6:15amAlso known as gastric sleeve surgery, this is one of several forms of weight loss surgery. It has pros and cons when compared to your other bariatric surgery options. This type of surgery doesn’t involve the intestine, and therefore doesn’t affect food absorption. This may make it less effective than other procedures, but weight loss results are still good, at least in the short term. Not as much data is available on long term results. The vertical sleeve surgery is a less complicated procedure than either duodenal switch or gastric bypass, and for that reason may be considered safer. The argument against this procedure is mainly that it is not reversible, as well as that the common risks of any bariatric procedure apply.
